Make a Weekend of It: Eagle Watch Weekend at Starved Rock

Winter in Starved Rock Country brings one of the most awe-inspiring sights of the season — bald eagles soaring along the Illinois River. On January 24 & 25, 2026, Eagle Watch Weekend returns, offering a full lineup of educational programs, live bird encounters, family-friendly activities, and unforgettable winter scenery.

If you’ve been looking for the perfect winter getaway, this is your sign to stay with Harbor Inn and experience it all.

What Is Eagle Watch Weekend?

Each winter, bald eagles migrate to the Illinois River, drawn by open water below the dams and an abundant food supply. Eagle Watch Weekend celebrates this natural phenomenon with events hosted throughout the Starved Rock area — from live bird of prey programs to nature talks, hiking, and kids’ activities.

This two-day, family-friendly celebration takes place at multiple locations, including:

  • Starved Rock Lodge & Conference Center
  • Starved Rock State Park Visitor Center
  • Illinois Waterway Visitor Center
  • Utica Village Hall

All events and exhibits are free and open to the public.

Weekend Highlights You Won’t Want to Miss

  • Live Birds of Prey Programs – See amazing raptors up close and learn about their behaviors, habitats, and conservation efforts from expert presenters.
  • Photography & Interpretive Talks – Whether you’re a seasoned photographer or just enjoy nature, there are talks and tips that will elevate your eagle-watching experience.
  • Guided Nature Hikes – Explore winter trails and scenic overlooks while hearing insider tips on where to spot eagles.
  • Kid-Friendly Fun – Activities like owl pellet dissections, wearable eagle wing crafts, and puppet-making bring nature to life for young explorers.
  • Shuttle Service – A trolley shuttle loops between locations throughout the weekend, making it easy to explore without worrying about parking.
